Department Manager: Job Description

Location: Fort Myers, FL / Tampa, FL

Description:
At PACIFICA Engineering Services, LLC, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Department Manager to oversee the operations and management of our branch. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead a talented team, drive business growth, and ensure the successful delivery of high-quality services across multiple disciplines. As a Department Manager, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our operations, fostering strong client relationships, and maximizing the profitability of our projects.

What You’ll Do:

  • Project a Positive Image: Represent the company in client negotiations, conferences, technical meetings, and within the office, maintaining a professional and positive image.
  • Professional Responsibility: Sign letters, proposals, and reports bearing the professional stamp (if applicable), and assume responsibility in the name of the company.
  • Contract Management: Sign standard contract terms and ensure any modifications to client contracts are approved by a corporate officer.
  • Liability & Obligations: Oversee all work assigned to the branch, ensuring professional liability and contractual obligations are met, with all technical work conducted to the standard of care.
  • Client Relations & Business Development: Manage direct relationships with clients and prospective clients, leading business development, proposals, contracts, and technical matters.
  • Team Guidance & Training: Provide guidance, training, and instruction to subordinates in regulatory, technical, and administrative aspects of environmental, geotechnical, or construction materials testing consulting.
  • Branch Strategy & Budgeting: Plan branch strategies in alignment with company goals. Manage costs, budgets, and utilization goals, ensuring successful project execution and profitability.
  • Performance Management: Counsel project teams, review performance, and evaluate the work of project managers and staff. Prepare performance evaluations and ensure effective feedback.
  • Market Expansion: Survey the marketplace to identify new clients and explore emerging markets for company services.
  • Employee Development: Motivate subordinates to accept increasing responsibility, while developing candidates for project management roles.
  • Business Growth & Profitability: Maximize both short and long-term profits for the branch. Prepare proposals and quotes for costs and fees to clients.
  • Operational Leadership: Oversee the direction, coordination, and evaluation of employees. Ensure the branch adheres to budgets and maximizes resource utilization.
  • Recruitment & Personnel Management: Interview, hire, train, and discipline employees in accordance with company policies and applicable laws. Maintain records of personnel transactions, such as timesheets, benefits, promotions, and performance reviews.
  • Client Relationship & Business Development: Seek new business opportunities, manage relationships with clients, and handle collections as part of business development efforts.
  • Project Management: Perform project management duties, including operational management of construction materials testing/inspection, concrete, soils, and related lab and field testing.
  • Radiation Safety: Serve as the Local Radiation Safety Manager and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Other Duties: Perform additional tasks as needed to support branch operations and company objectives.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Proven experience in managing engineering departments, with strong leadership and project management skills.
  • Expertise in business development, client relations, and contract negotiations.
  • Experience in environmental, geotechnical, and construction materials testing consulting.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, cost control, and profitability.
  • Ability to motivate teams and manage employee performance effectively.
  • Background in construction materials testing/inspection, including concrete, soils, and related fields.
  • Experience with regulatory standards, safety compliance (including Radiation Safety), and quality control.
